When trying to determine the diameter of balls that you already own and would like to replace, use a pair of calipers. If calipers aren't available, it is easy to measure the ball's diameter BETWEEN TWO FLAT PLANES.
Note: It is not possible to simply place a ball in front of, or behind a tape measure or ruler and accurately determine the diameter of the ball by eye.
To be sure that the recommended size balls for our cups will fit properly, we have standardized all the dimensions of our balls for cups and balls. ALL our ball sizes are measured INCLUDING the crochet jacket. This means a 1-inch ball will ACTUALLY measure 1 inch with the crochet.
This is noteworthy because some vintage manufacturers would name a 1-inch ball a "7/8-inch ball", because the ball was crocheted over a 7/8-inch core.
With the addition of 1 5/8-inch balls, we are now making crocheted balls in ten sizes.
